QC Roller Shade Specifying Tips: Hem Bars
Hem bars are one of the most important parts of a roller shade. Besides being mechanically important for the shade to function properly, they play a big role when changing the look/style of a window. In an effort to help you make an informed decision on your next spec with roller shades, we thought it would be useful to give you a few tips to take into consideration first. Explore below the hem bar styles we offer and how and when we recommend using each type.
Heat Sealed
Use: Has the clean look of continual fabric. Light weight and versatile.
Notes: Works with both “U” and “L” channels.
Avoid: Patterned sheers or blackouts as pattern will be visible to exterior.
External
Use: Like a fascia for the bottom of the shade, it has a modern industrial look typically mullion and fascia metal. complementing other metals used around shade.
Notes: When PTAC systems are below treatment, it’s recommended to use this hem bar due to its stability.
Avoid: Pairing with metal side channels as it likely will make unwanted noise when traversing up or down.
Fabric Wrapped
Use: The best of both worlds: the durability of the external bar combined with the clean look of the heat-sealed hem bar.
Notes: Similar to the external hem bar, when ac/vent systems are below treatment or on floor, it’s recommended to use this bar due to its stability.
Avoid: Pairing with “U” side channels as bar will not fit inside opening due to thickness. It is also suggested not to specify Basketweave fabrics with this hem bar.
