Bed Skirt vs. Box Spring Cover

In this industry, we tend to use these two terms interchangeably. It can be very confusing when trying to interpret designer specifications or communicating with manufacturers. In this blog post, we are attempting to bring clarity on how we at Quiltcraft define each bedding item. For more in-depth information about each of these, see our blog post called “Bottom of Bed Styles”.

Now, without further ado…

Bed Skirt

A bed skirt covers the top of the box spring to the floor with the intent of veiling the frame or metal stand supporting the mattress and box spring above the floor.

Box Spring Cover

A box spring cover decoratively wraps the box spring, but does not conceal any support or bed frame elements.

Here are some other items related to bedding which names often get mixed up:

Platform

Is a piece of bedding furniture that contains a frame, headboard, and footboard with wooden or metal slats across the bottom. It provides a sturdy, flat surface to place the mattress on, and no bedskirt would be needed when using a platform.

Bed Base

Bed bases look different for the Hospitality Industry. Generally though, they keep the mattress up off the floor to protect it from moist, dust and general floor dirt. With a bed base, a bed skirt is not required.

Foundation

A foundation is a wooden, steel or combination rectangular box with either wooden slats across the top or a solid wood top with a cover. It may look similar to a box spring but it does not contain any coils. However, similar to the box spring, it provides support for the mattress and prevents sagging.

Bed Frame

Sometimes is also known as a “bedstead”. It is the metal or wooden part of a bed that supports and positions base (box spring) and the mattress. Bed frames are usually at the bottom under the base to help hold the bedding off the floor.

Box Spring

True to its name, a box spring is usually a rectangular wooden box filled with a grid of wire coils. Technically “Box springs” no longer exist. They have been replaced with foundations, but people still refer to a foundation as a box spring.
